I once heard a volunteer leader I respect drop the following line in relation to a team member who was a royal pain in the neck.
“You know what they say. Lead, follow, or get out of the way."
His point was simple; get with the program and obey orders, step into a leadership role, or just shut up and disappear.
The team member in question was someone who brought a lot of intelligence and insight to the team but who also rarely turned out to actually solve the problem at hand. In other words, he was one of those team members that leaders really struggle with; the “Cranky Critic” who sits on the sidelines and complains but doesn’t want to really get into the game and get his jersey dirty. The whole “lead, follow, or get out of the way” comment was intended to send a clear message. “Put up or shut up.”
